陶芸家として何十年も呼んできた「粘土」って何？とあらためて調べてみると、地質学上は岩と同じ。

粒の大きさがちがうだけで、成分は同じだ。何かのきっかけで地表に出てきた岩が風雨で細かくなって、堆積していき、その一番小さな粒が粘土だ。その粘土を人間が、形作って焼いたものが焼き物というわけだ。

小石と砂と粘土と、粒の大きさの違いだけで、みんな岩が小さくなったもの。成分は変わらない。そこまで調べて、本当なのか？と、自分で実験した。私はある日、夫の実家がある熊本の石切山で拾った柔らかい石を自分で粉々に砕いて粘土を作ってみようと思いついた。本来なら、自然の中で何十万年もかけて風雨にさらされ、石が劣化して細かくなって行く過程を、強引にぶっ叩いてやってみた。ぶっ叩くこと3時間…。ここまで細かくすれば良かろうと、粉になった元・石に水を足して丸めてみたが…可塑性がなくパサパサで丸められない。なんで粘土にならないんだろう？…と考えて、そもそも、粘土が採れるところはどこか？考えると、世界中どこでも、粘土は川の両岸で採れる。川が増水したり氾濫したりして洪水が起きると、いちばん細かい粒がふわ～っと浮いて水と一緒に溢れ出て、水が引いた時には、細かくて軽いから、一番上に堆積する。それが粘土だ！
私は水を張ったボールに石を細かく砕いた粉を入れて、かき混ぜ、自家製の洪水を起こした。粉はガラスのボールの中で、数日かけてゆっくり堆積して行き、いちばん下に砂粒状、その上にもう少し細かい砂、とだんだん細かくなって綺麗な層を作った。自家製堆積層の上澄み液をこぼし、一番上の層を手にとると「よく知っている、すこし粘りがある粘土の感触」がした。これを丸めて焼いてみると、綺麗なレンガ色のビーズができた。緑色の石は鉄分が多い石だったと、焼いてみて分かった。（拙著「登呂で、わたしは考えた。」本文より）

Stones to Ceramics

While traveling or on beaches, we pick up stones. None of them are identical. This is a project in which I make clay from stones belonging to nobody and create ceramic pieces .

Geologically, a pebble, sand, and clay differ only in the size of grains. All of them are made of　a rock getting smaller.I broke stones into pieces by my hands to create clay; in a natural　process, it takes hundreds of thousands of years for a stone to be weathered and turn into　such a small particle. It can be seen that the clay made of green stones has a brick-red color　and contains much iron. The appearance is not equal to its contents.
I, myself, have been creating works by purchasing clay in a plastic bag from a material shop. I heard that mass-production makers and artists have started to stock up on clay because it is getting difficult for clay to be dug up in Kyoto, Japan. It is hard to see where a thing comes from and what it consists of. That’ s the reason I propose this project.
